Potty Training Your Child

Potty Training Your Child
Toddlers between the ages of 2 and 4 are generally ready for toilet/potty training. However, it is important to remember that each child develops at a different pace. No matter how anxious and ready you are, your child must be both physically and mentally prepared to master this developmental skill. You can only offer your child the materials, encouragement and methods necessary to do so. Your child's readiness will take it from there. Remember, the ultimate goal in toilet training is to have your child use the bathroom on his/her own. There are other tasks that go along with that, such as flushing and washing, dressing and undressing. All are accomplished around the same time.

Signs that your child is ready to toilet train
Feels "uncomfortable" after dirtying diapers.
Knows when it's time to perform a bodily function.
Has "scheduled" bowel movements.
Understands and follows simple instructions.
Awakens dry more frequently.
Remains dry for longer periods of time throughout the day.
Potty Training Supplies
Potty chair or adapter ring Books or videos about toilet training
8-12 pairs of training pants or disposable training pants A doll that wets
Loose-fitting clothing
Types of Potties
Adapter Rings
Adapter rings fit onto a toilet seat and are available in padded and folding versions. A child will need a step stool to reach it, so adult supervision is recommended.
Floor Models
Floor models are your child's very own "toilet," sized just right! Although these models foster a feeling of independence, an adult must empty and wash the pot. Some floor models are available in "convertible" styles. These can be used as a stand-alone potty. Some have a removable seat which can be used as an adapter ring. Features may also include a removable plastic bowl and a base that doubles as a step stool.

Potty Training Tips and Hints
Pretend play may help you tell if your child is ready for potty training. Dolls that wet and stories about potty training can encourage and stimulate. Learning full bladder control may not be complete for a while. Your child may have daytime bladder control, yet need to wear diapers at night time. If night time bladder control is a problem, cut back on giving your child liquids before bedtime.
When accomplished, reward your child with praise.
During this period, dress your child in loose, easy-to-remove clothing. Buy a supply of underwear, and let your child practice pulling them on and off.
Buy training pants big enough so they can be pulled down unassisted. Even if your child normally wears disposable diapers, using a cloth diaper without rubber pants while potty training makes it easier for the child to feel wetness and associate it with "dryness" after using the potty
Ask your child "Do you want to try the potty?"
Some children become upset by a toilet's "flushing" sound. If so flush after your child has left the room.
